VoLTE

VoLTE

VoLTE, also called Advanced Calling, uses 4G LTE to make voice calls and gives you the ability to use data while on a call.

Basics and Benefits

What is VoLTE?
Voice over Long-term Evolution (VoLTE) routes voice calls, texts (SMS) and picture (MMS) messages over the 4G LTE network. This allows you to use data while on a call. You may have heard the terms Advanced Calling or HD Voice to refer to this same feature.

What are the benefits of VoLTE?
VoLTE allows you to use data while on a call and make a 6–way conference call.

What is simultaneous voice and data?
With VoLTE you can make a voice call and use LTE data at the same time. That means while you’re on a call, you can also go to a website, buy movie tickets, pull up an email or use an app.

Is Wi-Fi Calling part of Advanced Calling?
Wi-Fi Calling is available for some devices. Learn more here.

Will my coverage area change with the switch to VoLTE?
Coverage doesn’t change with VoLTE. The wireless industry continues to shutdown legacy networks (2G, 3G or CDMA). Having VoLTE turned on is the only way to ensure ability to call and text nationwide.

When will Cellcom’s CDMA network be phased out?
Cellcom's CDMA network is in the process of being shut down. All devices must be VoLTE-compatible as soon as possible. Learn more at cellcom.com/networkupdate.

Devices and Handsets

What devices are not compatible with VoLTE?
Most Cellcom devices are compatible with VoLTE. Customers with devices that are not compatible need to upgrade as soon as possible. Devices that are NOT compatible and need to be upgraded include:

  • iPhone 6 and older models
  • HTC smartphones
  • Kyocera phones
  • Select LG and Motorola devices
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 and older along with other select models
  • Sonim devices

If a device is not compatible, you will not be able to use VoLTE and should upgrade your device as soon as possible. For further assistance call 611 from your Cellcom phone or Customer Care at 800-236-0055.

I currently have a Femtocell or a myHomeZone. Will I be able to use these with VoLTE?
Femotcell and myHomeZone are no longer supported. You should turn on or update to a device that supports Wi-Fi Calling for improved indoor coverage.

Calling Plans, Features and Account

Am I going to be charged data overages for phone calls?
No. Making voice calls and sending text messages using VoLTE will not incur data usage charges.

Will I be required to be on a data plan to take advantage of VoLTE?
Access to LTE data is required to use Advanced Calling, but basic devices do not require an additional data plan to use VoLTE.

What happens if my data speeds are slowed because I reached the limit on my data plan?
There will be no impact on VoLTE service or functionality when data speeds are slowed.

How does VoLTE affect my Directory Assistance calls?
With Advanced Calling all Directory Assistance Calls are routed through an automated call flow. If you are making a residential request, you will be redirected to a live operator for further assistance. Directory Assistance will continue to be billed at $1.99 per call.

Troubleshooting

Why can’t I use data while on a phone call?
To use data while on a phone call, VoLTE must be enabled in phone settings and you must be in 4G/LTE coverage. Test your LTE data connection while not on a call by looking for the “4G” or “LTE” indicator in the notification bar and attempting to load a web page. Data will not work in a call if the device is receiving a 3G/EVDO or 1x signal.

With VoLTE I can sometimes use 6-way conferencing. Why can’t I always make a 6-way conference call?
If you are calling on the VoLTE network you will have the ability to use 6-way conferencing. When you are calling on the traditional network (CDMA), you can continue to use 3-way calling but will not be able to make a 6-way conference call.

Can I still make or receive a VoLTE Call if the Mobile Data setting is turned off on my device?
Yes, even if Mobile Data is set to Off on your phone, you can still make or receive a call or send a text message using Advanced Calling as long as your phone's VoLTE Call setting is set to On

How do I enable call forwarding on VoLTE?
After your line is moved to the VoLTE network, all forwarded calls will go to voicemail instead of the currently saved call-forwarding number. However, you can re-set call forwarding by using the star (*) codes shown below (must be on LTE to make the changes).

  • To immediately forward all calls to another phone number, dial *72 + the 10-digit number to which you want to forward your calls. To remove, dial *720.
  • To forward your calls to another number only when you do not answer, dial *68 + the 10-digit number to which you want to forward your calls. To remove, dial *680.
