Cellcom Launches New 5G Internet Option in Door County
July 18, 2024 – Local wireless provider Cellcom is bringing a new 5G internet option to residents and businesses throughout Door County.
“Cellcom is thrilled to debut a 5G internet option for homes and businesses. Door County has unique challenges when it comes to deploying fast, reliable internet. Internet options were available but did not meet local needs. The wireless products lacked the desired speed and reliability. Fiber internet offered solutions to those problems but the cost to deploy fiber in the rocky terrain has continued to skyrocket slowing delivery of this option in the peninsula. Fortunately, technology continues to advance, and our new 5G home internet is here to help residents, businesses and vacationers in Door County get connected,” said Brighid Riordan, CEO of Cellcom.
Cellcom’s high-speed internet option is powered by new, 5G technology on existing cell towers. It pairs with internet equipment at the customer’s location and does not require professional installation or interior wiring. Service starts at $49.95/month and includes unlimited data at the fastest speed available to your address.
“The 5G technology uses different spectrum than our other wireless services and we have a variety of options to expand capacity as needed. As a result, busy times in the peninsula will not impact the speed and availability of the service,” said Rick Brooks, CTO and VP of Engineering at Cellcom. “We’re seeing speeds ranging from 100-300+ Mbps, which will vary based on distance from tower and any obstructions, but definitely sets this solution apart from other wireless options in the community.”
The new service is available in portions of Door County, including Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Ellison Bay, Ephraim, Fish Creek, Sister Bay and Sturgeon Bay. Service availability will vary by address.
“Door County is special to us. Throughout Cellcom’s history we’ve invested in the latest technology including our fiber backbone throughout Door and all the way to Washington Island. We’ve taken precautions to preserve the landscape while doing so and worked with partners throughout the county to understand and meet the technology needs. We are committed to finding the right technology to support our communities and this long-term dedication ultimately resulted in a new option for customers,” said Riordan.
