Sturgeon Bay, Wis. – July 24, 2008 Cellcom announced that wireless broadband Internet service will now be available to Door County residents. The new service offers users a connection speed that is comparable to high-speed DSL, which is about 15 times the speed of a dial-up connection.
Making broadband Internet available in Door County is a monumental step. “The fact that Door County is bounded by water, coupled with the rocky soil conditions, makes it difficult and expensive to deploy broadband services to this region,” explained Jim Lienau, CTO and vice president of corporate technical services. Major telecommunications providers have been slow to bring new technologies to Door County because of its remote location and low population density.
As a result, many of the area’s residents were previously limited to very slow dial-up service for Internet access. This option has other negatives, including missed calls or installing a second phone line.
Fortunately, Cellcom is committed to providing the latest advances in the wireless industry to rural areas. “From a telecommunications perspective, Door County is underserved, and we are proud to offer high-speed Internet access to these residents,” said president and CEO Patrick Riordan. “We are also building a new retail store in Sturgeon Bay, and continue to add towers to the area to better serve our Door County customers.”
The new broadband service is powered by Cellcom’s Evolution-Data Optimized (EVDO) Rev. A network. “EVDO Rev. A is currently the fastest cellular Internet system available, and also provides a strong signal,” said Lienau. Cellcom is the only telecommunications provider in Door County to roll-out of this super-high-speed wireless network.
The residential broadband Internet service delivers high speed access with many other perks.
• No extra phone lines, satellite dishes or cable connections are required;
• It’s compatible with Windows®, Macintosh® and Linux operating systems;
• Multiple computers in a home can simultaneously use Internet access for one monthly fee;
• The service is always on and connected, so phone lines are freed up -- no missed calls and no dial-up.
The current coverage area extends throughout most of Door County, including Washington Island. To find out if your location is within the service area, call a Cellcom representative at (920) 746-0560.
Cellcom’s renowned network is customized to rural markets and customers. Cellcom is a subsidiary of Nsight, a provider of communications services throughout Wisconsin and Michigan, with more than 60 retail and agent locations.
